SUBCONTRACTING

Project: Preheater Upgrade
Client: Illinois Cement

Artisan Contracting provided services for all construction, coordination and safety on this extensive plant expansion, which was designed to increase efficiency and production from 1900 STPD to 3000 STPD. This project consisted of constructing a new 270-foot preheat tower, Loesche roller mill system, kiln baghouse, cooler baghouse, tertiary air duct system, coal mill building and several material-handling and distribution systems.

In addition to these new installations, Artisan also modified the existing preheat tower, raw mill building, burner building, heat exchanger, extended the existing clinker cooler and installed all the necessary electrical wiring and system integration.

The majority of this work was completed while the plant remained in production, requiring several shutdowns for tie-ins and in particular, a final 38-day shutdown to bring the entire new system on-line. The extensive planning, scheduling and safety precautions allowed this project to be completed successfully and on time.

Partly due to working over 250,000 manhours on this project without a lost-time accident, Artisan Contracting, was nominated for and received the first-ever National MSHA Mine Construction, Maintenance and Repair Contractor of the Year award in 2007.
